Eleven teams competed for the title of Member/Guest Champion on the weekend of July 25 and 26. Some wonderfully talented guest tennis players provided some great tennis. One of the most exciting matches was the Semi-Final between the #2 seeded team of Andrew Kimball and his guest Julie Lilien versus unseeded team of Matt Fishbein and his guest David Gopstein. Their match lasted two hours forty minutes with Matt and David winning in two tie-break sets. They then had to play the top seeded team of member Jamie Porsella and his guest Sanae Oyama in the Finals 20 minutes later. Jamie and Sanae won the match 6-2, 6-3. Pictured are left to right below are David Gopstein, Matt Fishbein, Jamie Porsella and Sanae Oyama.
Another beautiful summer evening at the Knick.
On the weekend of July 12th & 13th six teams competed in a round robin tournament. The new format was not only a test of skills but also endurance. The top four teams advanced to the semi-finals on Sunday. The Champions, Maria Salnikowa and Fabio Arcilla defeated Phyliss Greenberg & Jonathan Holtz in the Finals.
After the difficult Winter the snow was finally melting off of the courts. Despite the late start we were still able to open up the 2014 season on May 9th.
Here are some pictures of member Richard Matusow teaching yoga to some enthusiastic members and staff. Richard has volunteered to teach a class every Thursday to any interested members at no cost. As you can see, he has his work cut out for him!!!
9 teams competed in the Century Doubles Tournament held on June 21st & 22nd. All teams had a combined age of at least 100. The #3 seeded team of Jonathan Holtz & Charlie Silver defeated the top seeded team of John Mogulescu (making his doubles tournament debut) and Reid Tratenberg. The final was well played but Jon & Charlie won in straight sets. Pictured from left to right are Charlie Silver, Jonathan Holtz, Reid Tratenberg, John Mogulescu.
Ray Scotto, Jimmy Wallenstein, Ray Habib, Lynn Brown
It was great to see Jimmy “Wheels” Wallenstein on his return trip to the Knick. Jimmy moved to Mass. To teach at Wellesley College but will be back in Brooklyn in two years. He looked great, still has that beautiful backhand and the only conversation on the court was between him and his opponent (inside joke!). Pictured with Jimmy are Ray Scotto, Jimmy, Ray Habib & Lynn Brown.
